Meal Suggestions

On the Piedmont (Trains 73 & 74)
Passengers riding the Piedmont can enjoy a complimentary beverage and snack - on us. Travelers are welcome to bring meals with them to eat on board.

Our recommendation:
Several restaurants in the Charlotte area deliver box meals* to the Amtrak Station for the afternoon Piedmont departure.

  • Discovery Place: Boxed meal ($4) with choice of slice cheese pizza, hamburger, or six-chicken nugget, with a bag of chips and canned soda. Call ahead to Stephanie or Helen at 704-343-2885. [Note: Not available for delivery, must be picked up at Discovery Place.]
  • Bojangles: Two pieces meal ($3.29), including chicken, a biscuit, and one fixing. Call ahead to Tim Burson at 704-332-2022.

* Prices of meals do not include tax. If the school has a federal tax ID exemption number, no tax is required.

On the Carolinian (Trains 79 & 80)
The café car serves breakfast and lunch entrees, salads, sandwiches, hot dogs, small pizzas, chips, cookies, drinks, etc. The café car has one microwave and usually seven four-seat tables to serve the entire train. Each coach seat has a pull-down tray for those who prefer to eat at their seats.

Our recommendation:
Groups of 15-20 can be accommodated in the café car on the train.
Groups of 20 or more: bring a bag lunch and beverage to be eaten on the train between Durham and Raleigh (11:00-11:40 am). Eating onboard the train leaves more time in Raleigh for activities; approximately four hours.

There are numerous restaurants within walking distance of the Raleigh station and the Capitol. For larger groups, the Lighthouse Cafeteria in the CP&L building (four blocks from the station) and Big Ed's at the City Market (six blocks) are available.

On your return trip:
With advance notice, Amtrak can provide your group with an evening meal aboard the train, consisting of a box meal with a sandwich or hot dog, chips and soda. The cost is $5.50 - $6.00 per person (depending on sandwich type). For more information contact the Amtrak Raleigh Service Manager at 919-838-3366. The café car will, of course, be open and serving ALL passengers. Keep in mind, though, that it has limited capacity to handle large groups.

Several restaurants in the Raleigh area deliver box meals to the Amtrak Station by 4 pm for the afternoon Carolinian departure.

  • Bojangles: Box Meal ($5.16 each) includes 2 pieces of chicken, side, drink. Call ahead to Melissa Chestnut, 919-309-0030.
  • Chick-Fil-A: Box Meal ($5.25 each, tax is included) includes sandwich, chips, chocolate chip cookie, drink. Call ahead to Carolyn Kerr, 919-872-6718.
