Meal Suggestions

Updated January 11, 2010

On the Piedmont (Trains 73 & 76)
In the lounge car there is complimentary coffee, hot chocolate or bottled water. Drink and snack vending machines have been added and offer a larger selection of refreshments at reasonable prices. Travelers are welcome to bring meals with them to eat on board.

Our recommendation:
Several restaurants in the Charlotte area deliver box meals* to the Amtrak Station for the afternoon Piedmont departure.

  • Discovery Place: Boxed meals available. Call Audra Peeler for options and reservations, 704-348-1993. (Note: Not available for delivery, must be picked up at Discovery Place.)
  • Bojangles: Box meals are available upon request. Prices and items vary. Call ahead to speak to manager at 704-332-2022.
  • Honey Baked Hams: Box meals are available upon request, $6.50 each. Delivery charge is $10 or $15 depending on size of group. Call ahead to speak to manager at 704-503-4637.
  • Pizza Hut: Personal Pan Pizzas, $2.99 each. Call ahead to speak to manager at 704-597-9300.

* Prices of meals do not include tax. If the school has a federal tax ID exemption number, no tax is required.

On the Carolinian (Trains 79 & 80)
The cafe car serves breakfast, lunch and dinner entrees, salads, sandwiches, hot dogs, small pizzas, chips, cookies, drinks, etc. The cafe car has one microwave and usually eight four-seat tables to serve the entire train. Each coach seat has a pull-down tray for those who prefer to eat at their seats.

Our recommendation:
Groups of 15-20 can be accommodated in the cafe car on the train.
Groups of 20 or more: bring a bag lunch and beverage to be eaten on the train between Durham and Raleigh (10:30-10:55 am). Eating onboard the train leaves more time in Raleigh for activities; approximately five hours.

There are numerous restaurants within walking distance of the Raleigh station. For larger groups, the Lighthouse Cafeteria in the CP&L building (four blocks from the station) and Big Ed's at the City Market (six blocks) are available.

On your return trip:
Several restaurants in the Raleigh area deliver box meals to the Amtrak Station by 4 pm for the afternoon Carolinian departure.

  • Bojangles: Box meals are available upon request. Prices and items vary. Call ahead to 919-859-1131.
  • Chick-Fil-A: Box meals are available upon request. Prices and items vary. Call ahead to Carolyn Kerr, 919-872-6718.
