These sample itineraries are only suggestions of possible field trips via the train. Please use current schedules to make adjustments for your particular boarding point and destination.

Charlotte to Raleigh

7:15am Check in at the Charlotte Amtrak Station, 1914 N. Tryon Street.
7:45am Carolinian (#80) departs.
10:40am Lunch aboard train.
10:58am Arrive at Raleigh Amtrak Station.
20-minute walk to State Capitol area; or Capital Area Transit (cat) has a regular stop at the Raleigh station, terminating at Moore Square Transit Center on Blount St. (adjacent to Exploris Science Museum and City Market). There is not cat bus service directly between the Amtrak station and the Capitol. For groups of more than 20, call ahead to cat, 919-833-5710 (ask the dispatcher on duty or Director of Operations).
11:30am- 3:55pm Tours of State Capitol area sites at prearranged times. To schedule, contact the Capital Area Visitor Center. 919-807-7950 or 1-866-724-8687.
Tour the Capitol and Legislative Building to learn how state government works. Visits to the NC Museum of Natural Science, NC Museum of History or Exploris are a real treat. To schedule Exploris group tours, call 919-857-1049.
4:20pm Arrive back at the Raleigh Amtrak Station for return trip.
4:50pm Carolinian (#79) departs for Charlotte and intermediate stops.
Meals aboard train as prearranged.
8:14pm Arrive in Charlotte.
.. (Note: Instruct parents meeting the train to call 1-800-USA-RAIL one hour before scheduled train arrival to ask, "Is #79 on time into Charlotte tonight?" If some unexpected delay should occur, parents can adjust their arrival time at the station.)

Raleigh to Charlotte
6:35am Check in at the Raleigh Amtrak Station, 320 W. Cabarrus Street.
7:05am Piedmont (#73) Departs.
7:30am Enjoy one complimentary snack and beverage in the food service car.
10:14am Arrive at Charlotte Amtrak Station.
Charlotte Transit - Bus Route #11 (to Uptown) stops across the street from the Amtrak Station every 15-20 minutes. Groups of 15-30 should call ahead to Customer Service at Charlotte Transit, 704-336-RIDE(7433). Fare is $1.10 per person each way. For groups larger than 30 to destinations not on Charlotte Transit Routes, please contact one of the charter bus companies listed under Contact Numbers.
10:45am-
4:30pm
Tours in Uptown Charlotte at prearranged times. Visit the sculptures, frescos and many museums in Uptown Charlotte. (Contact InfoCharlotte at 800-231-4636 for more details.) Discovery Place science and technology museum features exhibits on the human body, environment, outer space and more. Special films rotate through the Omnimax theater. For group information and teacher guides, call Discovery Place communications department at 800-935-0553.
5:00pm Arrive back at the Amtrak Station for return trip.
5:30pm Piedmont (#74) departs for Raleigh and intermediate stops. (Note: Regular food service on the Piedmont has been temporarily suspended. A complimentary snack and beverage is available.)
8:40pm Arrive in Raleigh.

Raleigh to Salisbury
6:35am Check in at the Raleigh Amtrak Station, 320 W. Cabarrus Street.
7:05am Piedmont (#73) departs.

9:26am Arrive at Salisbury Station
Salisbury Transit provides service to the NC Transportation Museum in Spencer Monday-Saturday. Museum is closed on Mondays Nov. 1-March 31. Spencer is 10 minutes by bus from the station. Call ahead for group transportation, 704-638-5252.

Tour of Transportation Museum in Spencer, Historic Downtown Salisbury, National Cemetery at times you arrange. Once Southern Railway's repair facility, the NC Transportation Museum now features exhibits on early air, highway and rail transportation, including restored locomotive roundhouse. Seasonal train rides available. Call ahead for information, reservations and teacher's packet, 704-636-2889.
5:45pm Arrive back at the Amtrak Station for return trip.
6:13pm Piedmont (#74) departs for Raleigh and intermediate stops.
8:40pm Arrive in Raleigh
