Piedmont Puzzle

North Carolina's Train, the Piedmont, runs every day between Raleigh and Charlotte and makes station stops along the way at Cary, Durham, Burlington, Greensboro, High Point, Salisbury and Kannapolis. The locomotives, coaches and lounge cars are all owned by the State of North Carolina.

The diesel locomotives are painted to look like the state flag. They are named the "1792 City of Raleigh," the "1755 City of Salisbury" and the "1797 City of Asheville." The numbers on the locomotives are the dates each city was founded.

Each locomotive weighs 278,700 pounds or about the same as 80 automobiles and has 3,000 horsepower or about the same as 20 cars! The engines are 15 feet tall, 10 feet wide and 59 feet long.

The coach cars are named for state symbols. Try the puzzle below to name the state bird, state flower, state tree, state shell and state insect. Each picture stands for a word, or part of a word. The cafe cars are named for the largest bodies of water in the state, the Pamlico Sound and the Albemarle Sound.
