Take the Train to the State Fair
For those planning to attend the N.C. State Fair, it could be the best ride of the day. For the tenth consecutive year, the Carolinian will provide direct service to the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh for fair-goers west of the Triangle.
"This has been an increasingly popular way to get to the state fair," said Transportation Secretary David McCoy. "This also provides a terrific opportunity for people to experience train travel in our state."
Train passengers can buy their fair admission tickets on board the train while en route from Greensboro to Raleigh. The eastbound Carolinian leaves Charlotte at 8 a.m., stopping in Kannapolis, Salisbury, High Point, Greensboro, Burlington, Durham and Cary. The train arrives at the State Fair each day at 11:40 a.m. and departs at 4:30 p.m. The Carolinian will stop at the Blue Ridge Road crossing located directly across from the fairgrounds and about one block from the main gate, Friday, October 15 through Sunday, October 24.
Train enthusiasts also can catch a glimpse of railroading once they are at the fair. A restored caboose will be on display beside the Kerr Scott Building. N.C. Transportation Secretary McCoy encourages fair attendees to visit the caboose. "Last year, more than 50,000 people saw the restored caboose," said McCoy. "We want to share this piece of railroad history with others and give them an opportunity to learn more about our state-sponsored passenger trains and other railroad programs underway in North Carolina."
The Carolinian service is jointly paid for through Amtrak, state funding and passenger fares. All seats aboard the Carolinian are reserved. Because of the popularity of the state fair service, officials suggest making reservations as soon as possible. With an accompanying adult, children two and younger ride free. Children, ages three to 15, pay half fare. Seniors age 62 or older receive a 15 percent discount. For more information and reservations, visit your local Amtrak station or call 1-800 USA RAIL (872-7245).
