Railroad crossing closes as Enfield Bypass opens
Raleigh Traffic flow around Enfield should now be safer and smoother thanks to a new bypass and some railroad crossing improvements. The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) closed the Dennis Street (S.R. 1229) rail-highway crossing of the CSX railroad near the Georgia Pacific plant and opened the new Enfield Bypass last Friday.
Transportation officials say the addition of the new N.C. 481 Enfield Bypass provides a safer way for motorists to cross over the tracks and negates the need for the Dennis Street crossing. About 20 freight trains and 10 passenger trains use the CSX tracks daily.
The department has been working with the town for the past several years to improve safety and traffic flow near the railroad. The Plant Street crossing was closed two years ago in an effort to reduce the overall number of rail-highway crossing in town.
