Improvements made to railroad crossing in Raeford

Raleigh – The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has installed crossing gates and signals at the Mockingbird Hill Road (SR 1311) crossing of the Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad tracks in Raeford.

The project cost $156,913 and was paid with federal funds. The Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad and state will split the costs to maintain the crossing.  One or two freight trains travel through the crossing daily at speeds up to 25 mph.

The Hoke County project is part of a comprehensive statewide program to enhance highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public railroad crossings. Mechanical warning devices of some sort are now in place at more than 2,300 of North Carolina's 4,350 public crossings.
