Improvements Made to Rail Crossing in Charlotte
RALEIGHThe N.C. Department of Transportation has upgraded crossing signals and gates at the intersection of Nevin Road and the Norfolk Southern tracks in Charlotte. Improvements include additional electrical hardware for the four-quadrant gates to accommodate Charlotte Area Transit System's future needs.
The $139,700 project was paid for with 90 percent federal funds and while the remaining 10 percent was paid for by the city of Charlotte. Norfolk Southern and Charlotte will split the cost to maintain the crossing. UP to four freight trains travel through the crossing daily, at speeds up to 35 miles per hour.
This Mecklenburg County project is part of a comprehensive statewide program to enhance highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public railroad crossings. Mechanical warning devices are now in place at nearly 2,400 of North Carolina's 4,182 public crossings.
