Improvements Made to Rail Crossing in Charlotte

RALEIGH —The N.C. Department of Transportation recently revised the crossing signals and installed crossing gates at the intersection of Westinghouse Boulevard (State Road 1410) and the Norfolk Southern tracks in Charlotte.

The $215,900 project was paid for with 90 percent federal funds and 10 percent state funds from NCDOT. Norfolk Southern and the state will split the cost to maintain the crossing. Four freight trains travel through the crossing daily at speeds up to 10 miles per hour.

This Mecklenburg County project is part of a comprehensive statewide program to enhance highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public railroad crossings. Varying types of mechanical warning devices are now in place at nearly 2,400 of North Carolina's 4,182 public crossings.
