Improvements Made to Rail Crossing in Greensboro
RALEIGHThe N.C. Department of Transportation has installed longer gate arms and improved the crossing signals at the intersection of O’Ferrell Street and the Norfolk Southern tracks in Greensboro.
As part of the Sealed Corridor project, this $10,000 improvement was fully paid for with funds from the Federal Railroad Administration. Norfolk Southern and the city of Greensboro will split the cost to maintain the crossing.
Sixteen freight and passenger trains travel through the crossing daily at speeds up to 79 miles per hour.
This Guilford County project is part of a comprehensive statewide program to enhance highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public railroad crossings. Mechanical warning devices are now in place at more than 2,400 of North Carolina's 4,121 public at-grade crossings.
