NCDOT Postpones Permanent Closure of Stanford Road Railroad Crossing Near Jamestown

RALEIGH—The N.C. Department of Transportation is postponing the final closure of the Stanford Road (State Road 1550) railroad crossing near Jamestown while the department completes the state roadway system maintenance abandonment and acceptance process . The closure was originally scheduled for Wednesday, May 3.

Motorists should use the new Guilford College Road Bridge (S.R. 1546) over the railroad. The Stanford Road crossing is the only public rail-highway crossing between Raleigh and Charlotte without railroad warning devices. About 40 freight and six passenger trains use this crossing daily, at speeds up to 79 miles per hour.

When possible, the department works with communities to close or consolidate dangerous or redundant crossings. Since 1993, the state has closed more than 113 public at-grade rail crossings.
