NCDOT to Permanently Close Railroad Crossing Near Jamestown
RALEIGHThe N.C. Department of Transportation will permanently close the Stanford Road (State Road 1550) railroad crossing near Jamestown on Wednesday, May 3. Signs alerting motorists of the closure were posted the week of April 10.
In place of the crossing, a bridge has been built over the railroad as part of a Transportation Improvement Program project on Guilford College Road (S.R.1546). The Stanford Road crossing is the only public rail-highway crossing between Raleigh and Charlotte without railroad warning devices. About 40 freight and six passenger trains use this crossing daily, at speeds up to 79 miles per hour.
When possible, the department works with communities to close or consolidate dangerous or redundant crossings. Since 1993, the state has closed more than 113 public at-grade rail crossings.
