NCDOT Permanently Close Railroad Crossing Near Jamestown
RALEIGHThe N.C. Department of Transportation will permanently close the Stanford Road (State Road 1550) railroad crossing near Jamestown tomorrow, June 1. The closure was originally scheduled for May 3.
Motorists should use the new Guilford College Road Bridge (S.R. 1546) over the railroad. The Stanford Road crossing is the only public rail-highway crossing between Raleigh and Charlotte without railroad warning devices. About 40 freight and six passenger trains use this crossing daily at speeds up to 79 miles per hour.
When possible, the department works with communities to close or consolidate dangerous or redundant crossings. Since 1993, the state has closed more than 113 public at-grade rail crossings.
