The $135,483 school bus safety project was paid for in full with federal funds. CSX and the town of Navassa will split the cost to maintian the crossing. As many as three freight trains travel trhoug the crossing daily at speeds up to 10 miles per hour.
This Brunswick County project is part of a comprehensive statewide program to enhance highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public railroad crossings. Mechanical warning devices are now in place at nearly 2,400 of North Carolina's 4,182 public crossings.
