Improvements Affect Traffic in Smithfield

RALEIGHMotorists in Johnston County will experience delays beginning today through Thursday, Feb.16, as the N.C. Department of Transportation and CSX upgrade and widen the railroad crossing surface at Peedin Road in Smithfield.

The Peedin Road crossing closed to traffic this morning, and crews expect to re-open the crossing to motorists on Friday morning.

Crews will remove the existing crossing and replace it with new concrete panels that match the width of the roadway and sidewalks. This improvement is part of a larger NCDOT project to upgrade the crossing to four-quadrant gates in conjunction with the town of Smithfield’s widening of Peedin Road from the railroad tracks to U.S. 301.

More than 3,000 vehicles use this crossing on a daily basis.

Motorists should pay close attention when traveling through the area and follow signed detour routes. An up-to-date construction schedule will be available online at www.ncsmartlink.org.
