Improvements Made to Rail Crossing near Chapel Hill
RALEIGH The N.C. Department of Transportation has installed crossing signals and gates at the intersection of Eubanks Road (State Road 1727) and the Norfolk Southern Railway tracks near Chapel Hill. A traffic signal was also installed for the intersection of Eubanks and Mill House Road (S.R. 1725).
The $181,100 project was paid for with 90 percent federal funds and 10 percent state funds from NCDOT. NS and NCDOT will split the cost to maintain the crossing. Two trains travel through the crossing daily at speeds up to 10 miles per hour.
This Orange County project is part of a comprehensive statewide program to enhance highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public railroad crossings. Mechanical warning devices are now in place at nearly 2,400 of North Carolina's 4,182 public crossings.
