NCDOT Permanent Closing Railroad Crossings in Kittrell
RALEIGH The N.C. Department of Transportation will permanently close the McClanahan Street railroad crossing in Kittrell on Nov 27. Signs alerting motorists of the closure have been posted at the crossing.
Traffic at the McClanahan Street crossing will be directed to use the signalized Main Street crossing as an alternative route.
This crossing was identified for closure as part of an effort to reduce the number of redundant or unsafe rail/highway at-grade crossings throughout the state. The Kittrell Town Council voted in 2005 to permanently close the McClanahan Street crossing when safety improvements at the Main Street crossing were completed by CSX Transportation.
When possible, the department works with communities to close or consolidate dangerous or redundant crossings. Since 1993, NCDOT has closed more than 121 public at-grade rail crossings.
