NCDOT Permanently Closing Railroad Crossing in Middleburg
RALEIGH The N.C. Department of Transportation will permanently close the South Jackson Avenue railroad crossing in Middleburg on Nov. 27. Signs alerting motorists of the closure have been posted at the crossing.
The crossing was identified for closure as part of an effort to reduce the number of redundant or unsafe rail/highway at-grade crossings throughout the state. The Middleburg Town Council voted in 2006 to permanently close the South Jackson Avenue crossing.
When possible, the department works with communities to close or consolidate dangerous or redundant crossings. Since 1993, NCDOT has closed more than 121 public at-grade rail crossings.
