Improvements Made to Rail Crossing Near Pembroke

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation has upgraded the crossing cantilever signals and gates at the intersection of University Road (State Road 1561) and the CSX Railroad tracks near Pembroke. The project also includes advanced signal preemption for a new traffic signal located at University Road and N.C. 711.

Installation of the new equipment is to accommodate additional traffic lanes serving the university.

The $253,678 project was paid for with 90 percent federal funds and ten percent state funds from NCDOT. CSX and NCDOT will split the cost to maintain the crossing.

More than 20 freight trains travel through the crossing daily at speeds up to 45 miles per hour.

This Robeson County project is part of a comprehensive statewide program to enhance highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public railroad crossings. Mechanical warning devices are now in place at more than 2,400 of North Carolina's 4,121 public at-grade crossings.
