Improvements Made to Rail Crossing in Kinston

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation has installed crossing signals and gates at the intersection of Nelson Street and the Norfolk Southern Railways tracks in Kinston . Crossing grade signals were also installed where the tracks intersect with Mitchell Street .

The $105,010 Nelson Street project was fully paid for with funds from NCDOT. The Mitchell Street signals cost an estimated $136,200 and were also fully paid for by the state. Norfolk Southern and the city will split the cost to maintain the crossings as part of the Kinston Corridor project. Four freight trains travel through the crossings daily.

These Lenoir County projects are part of a comprehensive statewide program to enhance highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public railroad crossings. Mechanical warning devices are now in place at nearly 2,400 of North Carolina 's 4,182 public crossings.
