RALEIGH The N.C. Department of Transportation has upgraded the crossing signals and installed gates at the intersection of
Fraley Avenue
and the Norfolk Southern Railways tracks in
High Point
. The project also includes traffic signal preemption at the intersection of
Fraley Avenue
and
Surrett Drive
.
The $212,919 project was paid for with 90 percent federal funds and 10 percent local funds.
Norfolk
Southern and the City of
High Point
will split the cost to maintain the crossing.
As many as four freight trains travel through the crossing daily at speeds up to 10 miles per hour.
This
Guilford
County
project is part of a comprehensive statewide program to enhance highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public railroad crossings. Mechanical warning devices are now in place at nearly 2,400 of
North Carolina
's 4,182 public crossings.
