Improvements Made to Rail Crossing in High Point

RALEIGH — The N.C. Department of Transportation has upgraded the crossing signals and installed gates at the intersection of Fraley Avenue and the Norfolk Southern Railways tracks in High Point . The project also includes traffic signal preemption at the intersection of Fraley Avenue and Surrett Drive .

The $212,919 project was paid for with 90 percent federal funds and 10 percent local funds. Norfolk Southern and the City of High Point will split the cost to maintain the crossing.

As many as four freight trains travel through the crossing daily at speeds up to 10 miles per hour.

This Guilford County project is part of a comprehensive statewide program to enhance highway safety by adding or improving signals and gates at public railroad crossings. Mechanical warning devices are now in place at nearly 2,400 of North Carolina 's 4,182 public crossings
