RALEIGH The N.C. Department of Transportation has upgraded the crossing signals and installed two quadrant gates at the intersection of McCord Road (State Road 2427) and the Norfolk Southern Railways tracks in Huntersville.
The $176,473 project was paid for with 90 percent federal funds and 10 percent state funds from NCDOT. Norfolk Southern and NCDOT will split the cost to maintain the crossing.
The improvements will benefit the proposed North Corridor Commuter Rail Project, which would operate along 30 miles of existing Norfolk Southern rail line.
Four freight trains travel through the crossing daily at speeds up to 35 miles per hour.
