Subject:Quarterly Report # 16, North Carolina Sealed CorridorProject: TIP Project No. P-3419; Next Generation High Speed Rail Grant

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has completed the following tasks as part of the Sealed Corridor project since our last report to you in May 2000:

  • 7 plans sent for engineering by the railroad.
  • Closed the South Holt Avenue crossing (722 994N, Milepost H 16.66) to traffic, in Elon College. The crossing surface will be removed by Norfolk Southern soon.
    Health Monitoring has been authorized for the locations on Norfolk Southern's Main line not already authorized.
  • All the public crossings on Phase II (Norfolk Southern's H line from Milepost 0.67 to 72.7) have been evaluated.
  • Met with Norfolk Southern on July 14, 2000 to discuss the status of the improvements on Phase I (NS's MAIN line from Milepost 284.1 to 374.87).
  • Determined the locations that still need "1-800" emergency signs installed
    Construction was completed at the following location:SR 1332 (Scientific Street), in High Point; Crossing 722 352A,Milepost MAIN 295.76
  • Construction was authorized at the following locations:SR 2165 (Turner Street), in Thomasville; Crossing 722 327S, Milepost MAIN 305.0SR 1135 (Platt Leggett Road), near Linwood; Crossing 722 197X, Milepost MAIN 324.29SR 2539 (Peach Orchard Road), near China Grove; Crossing 724 367W, Milepost MAIN 337.98SR 1232 W. Thom Street, in China Grove; Crossing 724 388P, MilepostMAIN 343.94SR 1706 E. 1st Street, in Kannapolis; Crossing 724 404W, Milepost MAIN 349.1SR 1160 (Shamrock Road), near Harrisburg; Crossing 715 328G, Milepost 362.88
  • The proposed planometric designs for the modular crossings at the following locations were sent to Norfolk Southern for review and comment:Rider Avenue, in Landis ; Crossing 724 394T, Milepost 354.61McGill Avenue, in Concord; Crossing 724 418E, Milepost 355.12
  • The consulting firm of Gannett Fleming was given notice to proceed to update the Charlotte Traffic Separation Study, originally conducted in 1997, to reflect current conditions.
