Subject: Quarterly Report # 24, North Carolina Sealed Corridor Project;
TIP Project No. P-3419; Next Generation High Speed Rail Grant
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has completed the following tasks as part of the Sealed Corridor project since our last report to you in May 2002 (all involve Norfolk Southern Railway, unless otherwise noted):
- 2 plans sent for engineering by the railroad
Construction was authorized at the following locations:
- Longer gates at SR 1114 (Buckhorn Road), near Mebane, Crossing 735 141R, Milepost H 34.11;
- Longer gate arms at SR 1161 (West Hill Avenue), in Hillsborough,
Crossing 735 151W, Milepost H 40.36.
Construction was completed at the following locations:
- Longer gates at Church Street, in Elon, Crossing 722 993G, Milepost H 16.36;
- 4 quadrant gates at SR 1301 (Williamson Avenue), in Elon Crossing 722 995V,
Milepost H 16.73;
- Health monitoring at SR 1954 (Ellis Road), in Durham, Crossing 734 737A, Milepost H 60.27;
- 4 quadrant gates at East 15th Avenue, in Lexington, Crossing 722 303D, Milepost Main 317.99;
- Longer gates at Stroup Farm Road, in Newell, Crossing 715 338M, Milepost Main 367.00.
The following crossing was closed:
- SR 1373 (Walton Crossing), near Burlington, Crossing 735 138H, Milepost H 33.33.
Other items of note:
- Right-of-way acquisition was authorized on July 2, 2002 for the NC 152 improvement project in China Grove. This project will facilitate the closing of the Chapel Street (724 386B, Main 343.55) and Liberty Street (724 381S, Main 342.67) crossings. Construction is scheduled to begin January 2004.
- The Public Crossing Safety Initiative (PCSI) was initiated on 4/15/02 to investigate, evaluate, and provide recommendations for safety improvements for all private crossings on the Sealed Corridor.
- Construction of the computerized train control (CTC) project as part of the North Carolina Railroad Improvement Program (NCRRIP) was authorized for Phase II of the Sealed Corridor (NSs "H" line) to include revisions to the grade crossing signals and gates (as necessary).
