Subject: Quarterly Report # 29, North Carolina Sealed Corridor Project;
TIP Project No. P-3419; Next Generation High Speed Rail Grant
During the first quarter of 2004, the North Carolina Department of Transportation has completed the following tasks as part of the Sealed Corridor project (all involve Norfolk Southern Railway, unless otherwise noted):
Plans were sent for engineering by the railroad for the following location:
- 4 quadrant gates and traffic signal preemption at SR 2848 (Orr Road), in Charlotte, Crossing 715 350U, Milepost Main 372.19
Railroad construction was Authorized at the following location:
- Longer gate arms at SR 1182 (Millbrook Road), near Harrisburg, Crossing 715 334K, Milepost Main 365.62
- Upgrade to LED light units on 8 crossings from S 159.73 through S 164.47 (CSX)
Construction was completed at the following locations:
- Longer gate arms at Plum Street, in Durham, Crossing 630 472K, Milepost H 56.40
- Longer gate arms at Driver Street, in Durham, Crossing 630 471D, Milepost H 56.70
- 4 Quadrant gates at SR 1954 (Ellis Road), in Durham, Crossing 735 236Y, Milepost H 57.57
- 4 Quadrant gates at SR 1652 (N. Harrison Avenue), in Cary, Crossing 734 755X, Milepost H 72.58
- 4 Quadrant gates at SR 1312 (Academy Street), in Cary, Crossing 734 756E, Milepost H 72.70
- Longer gate arms at Council Street, in Salisbury, Crossing 715 289T, Milepost Main 333.77
The following crossing was closed:
- SR 2124 (Hackett Street), in Spencer, Crossing 715 308V, Milepost Main 329.76
Private Crossing Safety Initiative (PCSI):
- Plans were sent for engineering by the railroad for Terrell’s Trailer Park, PVA, near Hillsborough, Crossing 735 160V, Milepost H 41.82.
- Crossbuck and stop sign studies are underway at numerous locations between Raleigh and Charlotte.
Rail View Consortium:
- The Rail View project has placed on hold until third quarter 2004 due to staffing issues.
Other items of note:
- We have received from NS a preliminary cost estimate and materials list for the installation of the SEAR remote intelligent signal monitoring system to be installed on all active warning devices on the Sealed Corridor between Cary and Charlotte. Staff is in the process of reviewing and will issue an authorization to construct in the coming weeks.
- We continue to wait for CSX to provide a plan for equipping the Raleigh-Cary crossings with a remote intelligent signal monitoring system.
