Wayside Horn

The NCDOT worked with Railroad Controls Limited and Nash County Railroad to install and test an automated wayside horn system in Rocky Mount. The system is designed to reduce the overall ambient horn noise by using a warning horn installed at the crossing that focuses an audible warning at the railroad crossing itself instead of using the horns mounted on the trains. The locomotive horn is not used after the wayside horn is installed.

The system is activated by the existing crossing signal system and projects a recorded train horn sound to traffic at the railroad crossing. This type of detection system addresses concerns from area residents about train noise pollution.

The test site was located at the Winstead Street crossing of the Nash County Railroad in Rocky Mount. The wayside horn system was installed mid 2005. The study is now complete. The study team determined that the wayside horn offers significant sound relief to resident and others in the area around a crossing. The system has been turned over to the City of Rocky Mount and is in service as an accepted traffic control device. More information about wayside horn is available in the report listed above.
