Public Involvement Milestones

The NCDOT has held numerous meetings with Charlotte/Mecklenburg officials, community leaders, and affected neighborhood residents to discuss the proposed rail crossing enhancements. The purpose of these meetings has been to explain the Traffic Separation Study process, address concerns, and to develop a project that is a win-win for the community, City of Charlotte, NCDOT and railroads.

1997
Public meetings held as part of the Charlotte Traffic Separation Study (TSS) of the North Carolina Railroad corridor (between 36th Street and Back Creek Church Road)
2000

City of Charlotte/Charlotte Area Transit System undertake Northeast Corridor transit study, which includes possible light rail along a portion of the corridor

2001

A revised TSS is conducted for the Charlotte project noting changes in development and traffic density; additional public meetings held

2002

Revised traffic counts indicate substantial increases in traffic along corridor

2005

NCDOT creates website to provide information and address questions about Back Creek Church project

December 2006

Notice given to public on closure of Rocky River Road crossing

January 2007

Rocky River Road crossing closed

April
2007

Charlotte TSS website updated to discuss improvements at all four Charlotte area crossings

Late 2007

Construction is slated to begin on McLean Road crossing improvements

2008

Construction slated to begin at Newell-Hickory Grove Road/Old Concord Road and Back Creek Church Road crossings.
