Charlotte Northeast TSS Implementation

Rocky River Road (SR 2828) at
North Carolina Railroad/Norfolk Southern Railway

Crossing No: 715 346E, Milepost 370.14

Rocky RiverIn January 2007, Norfolk Southern Railroad and the N.C. Department of Transportation permanently closed the Rocky River Road (State Road 2828) railroad crossing in Charlotte (Newell community). Signs alerting motorists of the closure were posted in December 2006.

This crossing was identified for closure in the initial 1997 Charlotte Northeast Traffic Separation Study. This was a badly humped crossing and long wheelbase and low-hanging vehicles frequently hung on the crossing. Over the past years, several train/vehicle crashes have occurred, most recently in 2006. Approximately 50 freight and six passenger trains use this crossing daily, at speeds up to 79 miles per hour.

Rocky RiverIn January 2007 Norfolk Southern railroad removed the crossing, including the warning devices (gates and flashers). NCDOT removed the pavement and constructed a turn around on the east side on Rocky River Road.

Those seeking alternate routes should use either the Orr Road or Newell-Hickory Grove Road crossings to the south or Harris Boulevard to the north.

When possible, the department works with communities to close or consolidate dangerous or redundant crossings. Since 1993, the DOT has closed more than 113 public at-grade rail crossings.
